Three soldiers, one Maoist rebel killed in Nepal

Three Nepalese soldiers and one Maoist guerrilla have been killed as government troops stepped up their campaign to flush out rebels fighting to turn the country into a Communist state.

The Defence Ministry says the three soldiers and the rebel were killed, and an unspecified number injured, when rebels ambushed a military patrol with a landmine in west Nepal's Lamjung district.

A Ministry statement says the army also "completely destroyed three caves used for training and shelter by the rebels in Dolakha district."

Dolakha, in central Nepal, is a stronghold of the Maoist gurrillas, who are campaigning to abolish the constitutional monarchy and set up a one-party Communist state in the mountainous nation.
