Nepalese army kills 50 Maoist rebels in clash

The Nepalese Army says it has foiled a bid by Maoist rebels to destroy a communication tower in the country's midwest, killing at least 50 rebels.

Nepal's Defense Ministry says four soldiers were also killed and eight wounded in the fierce gunbattle at Rammate village.

A Defence Ministry spokesman says the rebels fled the scene after the seven hour gunbattle.

More than 300 Maoist guerrillas and 80 security force personnel have been killed in just two weeks of rebels attacks and retaliatory operations by the army.

About 200 rebels have been arrested.
