US soldier killed in Afghanistan

The United States military has confirmed the first death of an American army soldier by enemy fire.

As Camille Funnell reports a US special forces soldier was killed in a firefight in eastern Afghanistan.

The US soldier had been on a mission to coordinate with local Afghan tribes near Gardez-Khost. He was killed by small arms gunfire, no-one else was injured. With America now mourning the first death of a military member by enemy fire, the commander of the US war in Afghanistan General Tommy Franks has no illusions about the task facing his troops. 'Dangerous work indeed.' But the central commander says America is undeterred. 'This will take time, we have a patient nation, we have a patient president and I am patient.' Meanwhile US warplanes are continuing to bomb caves in eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistani border.
