Norway peace bid picks up in Sri Lanka
Norway's bid to broker peace in Sri Lanka has received a new boost with a top rebel leader planning to return home while preparations are underway for direct talks
The London-based chief negotiator of the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, Anton Balasingham, is due in Sri Lanka shortly for talks with his leader Velupillai Prabhakaran ahead of opening negotiations with Colombo.
The government and the L-T-T-E entered into a formal ceasefire on February 23rd.
Colombo says it is sounding out an overseas venue for the face-to-face talks with the Tamil Tigers.
Last week, the United States warned the L-T-T-E not to jeopardise the Norwegian-brokered truce and hinted that the international crackdown against terrorism could be extended to them.
More than 60-thousand people have been killed in the drawn out Tamil separatist campaign.
