S Korea to launch satellite for military purposes

South Korea is to launch a satellite for military purposes for the first time in 2005.

The information and communication ministry says, satellite operator KT Corp and military authorities signed a memorandum of understanding late last year to jointly launch and use the "Koreasat-5".

South Korea has four satellites, all used for non-military purposes such as communications, weather observation and scientific research.

The new communications satellite will be shared equally by private users and military authorities.
