Japan's PM plans first official visit to Australia

Japanese prime minister, Junichiro Koizumi, is reportedly planning his first visit to Australia.

As Tokyo correspondent Mark Simkin reports, free trade is believed to be high on his agenda.

The Japanese prime minister is currently touring south east Asia, and according to Japanese media reports, he wants to visit Australia and New Zealand in May. The foreign ministry says a final decision has not yet been made. It's believed Mr Koizumi wants to include Australia and New Zealand in a proposed Asian economic alliance. It would be the first time a Japanese leader has visited Australia in four years. Mark Simkin, Tokyo.
