Accusations against Cambodia's National Election Committee
Cambodia's main opposition party has accused the National Election Committee of obstructing its campaign for next month's local elections.
The secretary general of the Sam Rainsy Party says workers in several villages in three provinces had been barred by the committee from playing taped messages of party president Sam Rainsy.
However, a senior NEC official representing the Cambodian People's Party of Prime Minister Hun Sen said that the taped messages were "slanderous and insulting", and opposition followers had only been cautioned against playing them.
In the election, on February 3, voters will choose ruling councils for more than 16-hundred communes, or administrative clusters of villages, which are currently governed by CPP appointees.
The election campaign has already been marred by violence and intimidation of opposition candidates.
