Malaysia's ruling coalition wins Indera Kayangan by-election

In Malaysia, the ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has had a resounding victory in a by-election in a small northern constituency.

The National Front coalition retained the tiny constituency of Indera Kayangan in the northernmost state of Perlis, defeating the opposition candidate and increasing its majority.

The coalition's campaign relied heavily on images linked to the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.

The opposition party PAS has criticised what it called the government's "dirty tactics" in using images of Islamic extremism to scare Chinese voters
