More Chinese to resettle in Tibet and Mongolia
The Chinese government will go on with plans to move thousands of Chinese settlers into a traditionally Tibetan and Mongolian area, despite loosing World Bank backing after international criticism.
A spokesman for the Qinghai region anti-poverty office told the French newsagency AFP the government will cover the funds which were originally to have been provided by the World Bank.
Around 20,000 people are due to move into the Dulan region of Qinghai province which borders Tibet, in March.
According to Beijing, the project is part of a programme to develop the disadvantaged west of the country and help some of China's poorest inhabitants.
But in an internal report in 2000, the World Bank accepted the planned migration risked contributing to the destruction of the region's unique Buddhist culture.
