UN secretary general arrives in Kabul The United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan, has arrived in the Afghan capital, Kabul barely 24 hours after US special forces engaged remnants of the Taliban regime in southern Kandahar province in a grim reminder that the shooting war is far from won. Kofi Annan arrived on a crisp clear Kabul morning from the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, the latest international statesman to lend moral and political support to Afghanistan's interim administration. The first Secretary General to visit Afghanistan in more than 40 years he's expected to meet with the country's new leaders, as well as tour parts of the capital which have been badly damaged by fighting. Mr Annan is also expected to announce the makeup of the 21 member emergency loya jirga or council of tribal elders which is to be convened by the middle of the year.
