China unveils new policy on Taiwan
China has unveiled a new, softer line on relations with Taiwan, pushing for closer links with the ruling pro-independence party.
An editorial in the People's Daily even invited members of President Chen Shui-bian's Democratic Progressive Party to visit the mainland.
The article, echoing a speech the previous day by Beijing elder statesman Vice Premier Qian Qichen, sought to draw a distinction between the bulk of the DPP and unspecified hardliners within it. Mr Qian's speech made a similar point about the island's population as a whole, and called for greater economic and trade cooperation across the Taiwan Straits.
The new policy is a potentially significant shift in Beijing's attitude towards the DPP, which took power under President Chen Shui-bian in May 2000.
Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party has welcomed Beijing's new stance.
