Japanese PM fires Foreign Minister

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has fired controversial Foreign Minister Makiko Tanaka.

The dismissal comes after Tanaka became embroiled with bureaucrats in her ministry over reported remarks concerning attendees at a recent conference on aid to Afghanistan.

The dispute was the latest problem over Tanaka's handling of the Foreign Ministry, already hit by a series of scandals over alleged misdeeds by senior officials.
