Japanese company accused of repackaging Australian beef A Japanese company is under investigation for secretly repackaging Australian beef. Late last year, when Japan's first case of mad cow disease was discovered beef prices plunged. In an attempt to help the domestic industry, the Japanese government introduced a subsidy scheme. It's allleged that the Snow Brand food company tried to take advantage of that scheme by disguising its Australian beef as Japanese beef. According to the head of the warehouse that stored the meat, Snow Brand employees secretly repackaged 14 tonnes of beef. Two years ago, Snow brand Foods parent company was involved in Japan's worst food poisoning case. Mark Simkin, Tokyo. 23/01/2002 10:01:14 PM | ABC Radio Australia News
