US tries to ascertain fate of kidnapped journalist

United States authorities are trying to ascertain whether an American journalist kidnapped in Pakistan is alive or dead.

As Camille Funnell reports, the fate of US journalist Daniel Pearl - kidnapped nine days ago - remains unclear.

The Justice Department and other US agencies have confirmed they've seen an e-mail claiming Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl has been killed. The e-mail was received by CNN and other news organisations, but its origins are yet to be verified. The confusion about Daniel Pearl is compounded by Pakistani police officials stating they're received a call demanding two million US dollars for Pearl's release. The caller also demanded the release of a former Taliban ambassador to Pakistan. Police say the caller gave the US 36 hours to meet the demands.
