Thailand to hold ASEAN retreat
Thailand will host a two-day retreat for Association of Southeast Asian Nations foreign ministers in the resort island of Phuket from February 20th. Thai foreign ministry spokesman Rattakit Manathat said the meeting would have no set agenda, but was likely to follow up on issues explored at the ASEAN summit in Brunei last year. He says measures to enhance cooperation between the 10 members of the Southeast Asian bloc would also be addressed. Mr Rattakit says it is also possible international crime, drugs and East Timor's status in ASEAN will also be discussed. East Timor's interim Foreign Minister Jose Ramos Horta has said full ASEAN membership is vital to the fledgling nation's future security, but that the issue depends on Timor's post-UN government. The February meeting will be the second successive year that the foreign ministers' retreat has been held separately to the official meeting, which is to take place in Brunei in July.
