Tamil Tigers and Sri Lankan gov't to begin talks on troops
Norwegian peace brokers are holding talks here with Sri Lankan leaders on a formal truce today, that could clear the way for peace talks with Tamil Tiger rebels, possibly by mid-year.
Norway's Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen will discuss details of a ceasefire which the Sri Lankan authorities are optimistic of establishing with Scandinavian monitoring.
Constitutional Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris said there was now greater understanding between the government and the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam of the problems faced by both sides in the pursuit of peace.
He said he hoped the sides could implement a bilateral truce within about two weeks, although the government was not keen on sticking to a rigid timeframe.
As part of confidence-building measures, the military and Tamil Tigers Thursday tarted de-mining at a second location in the northwest of the island to open a safe passage for civilians to cross frontlines.
