Indonesian police parade suspected people smuggler

Four months after the drowning of 350 asylum seekers bound for Australia, Indonesian police have paraded the man they say is the people smuggler responsible for the incident.

Mark Bowling reports.

"Since his arrest last November Abu Quassey has been questioned by Indonesian police about the leading role they say he played in organising the ill fated voyage of a fishing boat. There were only 44 survivors after the leaky vessel was swamped by a wave and sank off the Java coast. Abu Quassey says it was the first time he was involved in a people smuggling operation. He's sorry for the sinking and the deaths of more than 350 people but he claims he's not to blame. Indonesian police believe Abu Quassey was the mastermind responsible for this and other illegal voyages to Australia. If convicted he could go to jail for 7 years."
