President Bush to urge Asia to stand firm in defence of freedom
US President George W. Bush is aiming to shore up Asian backing for his war on global terrorism when he starts a week-long tour of Japan, South Korea and China this weekend.
Before leaving for Tokyo, President Bush told Japan broadcaster, NHK, the world must stand firm in defence of basic freedoms.
He said he would assure the Prime Minister of Japan, Junichiro Koizumi, and other Asian nations that he would continue to consult and work with them, to keep the coaltion against terrorism intact.
President Bush is scheduled to hold summit talks with Mr Koizumi on Monday, with the parlous state of the Japanese economy also expected to figure in their discussions.
