The Defence Minister Robert Hill says a Special Air Services soldier has died from wounds he received from a land mine last night in southern Afghanistan.

The man's name won't be released until his family has been informed.

Senator Hill has sent the Government's condolences to his family and thanked his friends for trying to save his life.

There was a medical team was sent in urgently and he was helicoptered out but unfortunately the injuries were too severe.
