Nepal's parl't votes to extend state of emergency

Nepal's parliament has voted to extend by three months a state of emergency first imposed in November to combat a violent Maoist rebellion.

The government proposal to extend the emergency rule was overwhelmingly backed by194 members of the lower house of parliament, far more than two-thirds majority needed for the extension.

The vote followed weekend attacks by the Maoist -- the bloodiest since the insurgency began in February 1996 -- which left more than 150 people dead.
