Maoist death toll updated to 37

Defence officials in Nepal say at least 37 Maoist guerillas have been killed in the clashes with security forces in the west of the country.

It's the latest incident in a week that's left almost 300 people dead, in a major escalation of the guerillas' six year old insurgency against the Nepalese government.

Last weekend over 150 people, mostly soldiers and police, were killed in attacks.

Earlier this week, the Nepalese government voted to extend a state of emergency to control the insurgency.
