Indon President to launch first regional people smuggling conf

Indonesia's President Megawati Sukarnoputri today launches the first regional conference on people-smuggling.

As Graeme Dobell reports, the meeting in Bali is being co-chaired by Australia and Indonesia:

"Thirty seven countries are here from the Middle East, Asia and the South Pacific. Australia says all points of the people smuggling pipeline are represented, the source countries, the transit states and the destination countries. While the conference is not going to create a new regional institution. It will set up some working groups to help police and intelligence work on people trafficking and Australia will offer legal resources to help countries that at the moment have no laws banning people smuggling.
