Violence spreads in western India
Violence has broken out in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad following an attack by Muslims on Wednesday on a train carrying Hindu activists.
South Asia correspondent Jonathan Harley reports.
"Police have imposed a curfew in five areas of Ahmedabad - the capital of the western state of Gujarat - as hundreds of Hindus have taken to the streets, ransacking and setting fire to shops and restaurants owned by Muslims. Police are using gunfire and teargas to control the crowds The attacks are in retaliation to the murder of 57 Hindu activists on a train in Gujarat ... muslims are suspected of being responsible. The murdered Hindus were returning from the northern town of Ayodyha where more than a quarter of a million Hindus have gathered - vowing to build a temple on the site of the destroyed 16th centrury Barbary Mosque. The mosque was razed in 1992 by Hindu hardliners sparking nationwide violence in which around 2-thousand people were killed."
