US troops disengage from mountain battle in Afghanistan About 400 U-S troops have been pulled out of Afghanistan's Arma Mountains where they have been fighting Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters. The American troops touched down at Bagram Airbase north of the capital Kabul as a U-S military spokesman said "a particular phase" of Operation Anaconda has been completed, even though the mission is not over. He said U-S forces have not come under any sustained fire in the last 72 hours. However, that's unlikely to mean the al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters have been wiped out. The operation, now entering it's tenth day, is expected to last at least another week. Driving snow and high winds had slowed the assault south of the city of Gardez, but clear skies yesterday allowed helicopters to resupply about 2,000 coalition troops operating in the rugged mountains. 11/03/2002 09:08:49 | ABC Radio Australia News
