Sri Lankan PM arrives in Jaffna
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has promised to work for peace during a visit to the embattled northern Jaffna peninsula.
Mr Wickremesinghe's visit to Jaffna, the cultural capital of Sri Lanka's minority Tamils, marks the first high-level political presence there for 20 years. Arriving in the province where the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have been fighting for an independent homeland for more than two decades, Mr Wickremesinghe said the next step to be acheived are peace talks.
Norway has arranged a formal truce between government forces and Tamil Tiger rebels who maintained a de-facto separate state in Jaffna for nearly five years before they were driven out by troops in December 1995.
Fierce fighting has gripped the area since then as the Tigers sought to retake the region.
