Workers step up protests in north east China's rust belt
Thousands of angry laid-off workers have stepped up protests in China's industrial northeast demanding back pay and welfare benefits from state firms.
Reuters newsagency quotes witnesses as saying a car was overturned as up to five-thousand workers protested in Daqing (da-ching), a day after several people were injured in clashes with paramilitary police.
In Liaoyang, (lee-ow-yung) a crowd of angry workers protested for a third consecutive day at city government headquarters demanding wage and welfare arrears and the release of their spokesman.
Police detained three labour leaders during the protest.
Nearly 20 years of market reforms have left millions unemployed or under-employed in what has become known as northeast China's industrial rust-belt.
