Japan welcomes South Korean envoy's visit to the North
Japan has welcomed an announcement that a South Korean envoy will visit the rival North, breaking a diplomatic impasse caused when Pyongyang broke off talks last year. Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, Yasuo Fukuda has told a Tokyo news conference that the visit by the envoy to the North will further the North-South dialogue and help ease tension on the Korean Peninsula.
North and South Korea simultaneously announced earlier today that Lim Dong-Won, the South Korean President Kim Dae-Jung's top advisor on security and foreign affairs, will visit the North in April.
North Korea broke off contacts with the South last year in anger at what it called the United States' hostile policy toward Pyongyang.
