Japan plans to increase coastal whaling

The Japanese Government plans to push for an increase in coastal whaling at the next meeting of the International Whaling Commission.

Tokyo correspondent Mark Simkin reports on Japan's latest attempt to boost the whaling catch:

"According to Japanese media reports, Japan will ask the IWC to allow coastal whaling in several small towns around the Japanese coast. It wants each of the communities to be able to kill 50 minke whales a year, saying the towns are facing severe economic distress because of the global ban on commercial whaling. In recent weeks, Japan has also flagged plans to increase its annual whale catch in the North Pacific. The international meeting will be held in a Japanese whaling town in late May. Mark Simkin, Tokyo."
