United States offers asylum to one-thousand Vietnamese refugees
The United States has offered asylum to about 1,000 Vietnamese refugees currently held up in remote northeast Cambodia.
However, sources say if the US wants to grant them asylum, then the refugees would have to be repatriated from Vietnam and not from Cambodian soil.
Cambodia and Vietnam established a repatriation program with a United Nations agreement earlier this year to deal with Montagnard hill-tribe people who have fled Vietnam's Central Highlands since early last year.
However, the UN said last week it was pulling out of the scheme, claiming Cambodia and Vietnam had violated the terms of the accord.
