Nordic observers begin monitoring ceasefire in Sri Lanka
Nordic observers have began monitoring a ceasefire between the Sri Lankan government and Tamil Tiger guerrillas who are preparing for their first direct peace talks in seven years.
The truce was brokered by Norway as part of its efforts to end a 19-year ethnic war and is monitored by representatives from from Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark.
The monitors will work with local observers in six districts of the North East Province where the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam want to carve out an independent state for minority Tamils. There have been no combat deaths reported since the truce was signed in February though both sides have complained of provocations, particularly in the east.
