Army troops and rebels begin joint work on Sri Lankan highway
The Sri Lankan army and their long-time opponents the Tamil Tiger separatist rebels have began joint exercise to clear mines from the road to the northern Jaffna peninsula.
The army is working northwards and the rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam pushing south a few hundred metres away to clear the Elephant Pass leading to the war-ravaged peninsula.
The pass and the highway have been part of the main battles in the long runing war because they control access to the peninsula which is one of the centres of the Tamil separatists.
A ceasefire agreement signed in February by the government and the rebels says reopening the A-9 highway, is key to helping restore normality to the north. The government and the Tamil Tigers are due to begin direct talks next month in Thailand, their first in seven years.
