Indonesia strongly condemns Israeli actions in the West Bank

Indonesia has strongly condemned what it calls Israeli aggression in the West Bank, saying the Jewish state is fully responsible for the safety of Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat.

Indonesia's Antara newsagency says the Security minister, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, issued the statement, stressing the role of Mr Arafat in the peace process.

Mr Yudhoyono says Indonesia firmly rejects all recent Israeli efforts to brush aside Mr Arafat's role.

The statement was issued after consultations with Indonesia's President Megawati Sukarnoputri, who is currently on a visit to India.

Mr Yudhoyono urged the implementation of a United Nations resolution adopted on Saturday calling on Israel to withdraw its troops from Palestinian territory, including Ramallah where Mr Arafat's headquarters are under siege.

It was the second recent statement by top Indonesian officials.
