Pakistani President set to announce referendum on extending term
Pakistani military President Pervez Musharraf will announce a referendum on Friday, to seek another five years in power before holding parliamentary elections later this year. The Pakistani cabinet will only say it has given General Musharraf, the go-ahead to hold a referendum "on important national issues".
But Pakistan's top newspaper editors say they have no doubt that President Musharraf will call a referendum to seek five more years in office and expects to win it.
Najam Sethi, editor of Lahore's Friday Times, says President Musharaff believes his victory is a "foregone conclusion"
The independent English-language newspaper, The News, said a referendum order put at a meeting of cabinet, discussed making boycotting the vote an offence and banning court challenges to its legitimacy.
