Former Indonesian military chief set to testify on East Timor
An Indonesian tribunal says there is sufficient evidence to prosecute a former East Timor governor over atrocities in 1999.
The court's presiding judge says it has decided to carry on examining the defendant, Abilio Jose Soares, who is charged with crimes against humanity during the bloodshed sparked by East Timor's vote for independence. Reuters newsagency says that Indonesian courts usually decide after preliminary hearings whether there is enough evidence to proceed.
Separately, the tribunal is set to hear testimony from former Indonesian military chief, General Wiranto in the case of East Timor's former police chief, Brigadier-General Timbul Silaen.
He has been charged with failing to prevent militias from carrying out several rampages.
The absence of General Wiranto from a list of 18 suspects in the East Timor violence has been criticised by rights groups.
