Former army chief addresses court
Indonesia's former army chief says his forces were given an impossible mission in East Timor in 1999.
In a rare public appearance after his ousting in 2000, General Wiranto spent three hours testifying to a human rights court in Jakarta.
General Wiranto was testifying in the trial of a former East Timor police chief, accused of gross human rights abuses,
He said despite 23-years of conflict, the army had to in one-month, unite pro-Indonesian and those opposed to integration.
General Wiranto said he told former president B-J Habibie that if autonomy was rejected, security be handed over to the United Nations and Indonesia become part of a U-N mission.
The General was not asked about accusations the Indonesian military and senior Jakarta officials organised and directed militia violence against independence supporters.
A total of 18 military, police, militia and civilian officials are due eventually to face trial over massacres in April and September 1999.
