China considering exempting import duties for AIDS drugs
China is considering exempting import duties for AIDS drugs sold by major pharmaceutical companies.
A Chinese health official says the move is being considered in an effort to make treatment more affordable for the country's rapidly expanding population of HIV/AIDS patients.
The director of the National Center for AIDS Prevention and Control says China's 26-percent import duty is much higher than the 15 percent tariffs levied by other countries.
The government is also trying to persuade drug companies to further lower prices.
Currently, the cost of treatment for an AIDS patient in China for one year is five-thousand dollars.
Last week, China announced it has an estimated 850-thousand people infected with the HIV virus which causes AIDS.
