High seas search for marooned dog abandoned
Animal protection officials in Hawaii have abandoned a costly high-seas hunt for a dog marooned on a sinking ship.
The search of more than four-thousand square kilometers of ocean to help track down an Indonesian tanker on which the captain's dog was stranded, cost the Hawaii Humane Society 100-thousand dollars.
The Indonesian-registered tanker, Insiko, suffered an engine room fire which left the ship without power and drifting for nearly three weeks before a passing Norwegian cruise ship spotted it and rescued the crew.
A crewman who died in the fire and the captain's dog were left behind, sparking the Humane Society to swing into action despite the huge cost of the operation. But rescuers say the vessel has sunk.
