Laotian parliament votes to keep president

Laos' newly elected parliament has voted to keep the country's ageing communist president and prime minister in place.

The National Assembly voted to retain 77-year-old President Khamtay Siphandone, and 66-year-old Prime Minister Bounnyang Vorachit.

President Khamtay has been president of Laos since 1998 and Mr Bounnyang has held the post of prime minister since March, 2001.

A radio broadcast says the parliament has voted in one new deputy prime minister, a new cabinet minister, and a new central bank governor.
