Two Aceh rebel members seek asylum in Finland
Two civilian members of the Aceh separatist rebel movement have briefly entered the Finnish embassy in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, requesting political asylum saying they feared for their lives.
The pair met the Finnish ambassador before leaving voluntarily through a rear building entrance and heading to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees office.
The A-F-P newsagency quotes one of the men as saying they had left the embassy and were in the basement of the office tower block in which the UNHCR is located to negotiate an asylum request.
He said while the Finnish embassy's response had been "positive," it had decided to hand the case over to the U-N refugee agency. The two said they were members of the Aceh-Sumatra National Liberation Front, the formal name of the Free Aceh Movement which is battling troops and police in Aceh province.
