Thousands of independence activists take to streets of Taiwan
Thousands of independence activists took to the streets of Taiwan's main city, Taipei, campaigning for the island to be officially called Taiwan rather than the Republic of China. The chanting protesters carried placards reading "Taiwan not equal to China" and marched to the presidential office to demand that the island's official title be changed to just Taiwan to remove any reference to the mainland. The march, which was peaceful, came after an earlier government proposal to put the word "Taiwan" on its passports.
Parliament barred the move in an apparent attempt to defuse a possible row with China.
Taiwan and China have been rivals since 1949 when nationalist Republic of China government forces lost a civil war to the Chinese Communists and fled to island of Taiwan.
