A mass protest against unemployment in Tokyo

More than 13,000 Japanese workers have marched through central Tokyo in protest against policies that have swelled unemployment to record highs.

The march, comes as Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi struggles to pull Japan out of its worst recession since the second world war, but the protesters claim he has betrayed election promises to reform the stagnant economy.

Mark Simkin reports.

fx.....The protest was organized by Japan's trade union movement… they say it's the biggest anti-government rally in decades. 10,000 people from around the country took part. Trade Union groups are worried about the state of the economy, and the government's inability to pull Japan out of recession. They called on Prime Minister, Junichiro Koizumi, to do more to turn the world's second biggest economy around. Later today, there will be a separate protest outside the national parliament. Mark Simkin, Tokyo.
