UN wants safeguards ahead of Cambodian elections
The United Nations has told Cambodia to take urgent steps to ensure political violence and intimidation do not mar general elections due next year.
In its final report on Cambodia's landmark local elections held in February, the U-N human rights office in Cambodia said the vote had been overshadowed by political intimidation.
It says police, military and local officials were involved in the majority of vote-related violence and killings.
The U-N report says in future elections Cambodia's military should be confined to barracks, off-duty police and soldiers should be banned from carrying weapons and all political parties should have fair access to the media.
