A 21-year-old Irish soldier serving with a United Nations peacekeeping force in East Timor, has been shot dead in an apparent accident.

The soldier was one of 42 Irish troops serving with the United Nations Transitional Administration.

Officials say he received a gunshot wound to the head while on a two-day patrol near the unit's base, close to the village of Taroman, near the border with West Timor.
