Malaysia's Anwar takes fluids during hunger strike

A day after saying he was on a hunger strike, Malaysia's jailed former finance minister Anwar Ibrahim, has downgraded his protest to a Muslim hunger strike, to allow him to drink fluids.

Anwar, who was sacked and jailed in 1998 after challenging Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, began a total hunger strike on Sunday in solidarity with six supporters held without trial for a year, accused of plotting to overthrow the government.

Reuters newsagency says the protest is part of a campaign to discredit Doctor Mahathir ahead of a visit to the White House, where he will receive thanks for his contribution to the U.S.-led war on terror.

Anwar's wife says prison authorities had advised her husband against a total fast and he is now on a Muslim hunger strike.

He is serving 15-years for sodomy and abuse of power.
