US military to hold dialogue with Indonesia
There are moves to establish a US-Indonesian security dialogue several months since President George W. Bush and Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri agreed in September to hold a regular bilateral security talks.
A senior Pentagon official will attend a meeting in Jakarta later this month that is expected to cover a broad range of international, regional and domestic issues.
A spokesman says there are concerns in Washington about instability in the sprawling Indonesian archipelago -- the world's fourth most populous country -- and the possible use of its terroritory as a haven by Islamic terrorists.
The meeting uis the first of its kind since Congress suspended US military aid and training to Indonesia in 1999 to pressure for an accounting of the Indonesian military's role in atrocities committed in East Timor.
It will deal with a broad range of international, regional and national security issues although counter-terrorism will be discussed.
