Indonesian prsoecutors postpone arrest of alleged terrorist cleric
Indonesian prosecutors have postponed the arrest of a Muslim cleric who is accused by Singapore of links to terrorism.
The cleric, 64-year-old Abu Bakar Ba'asyir, says the Supreme Court in Jakarta is trying to make him serve a jail sentence for subversion unrelated to international terrorism, which was imposed in 1985 under a now-repealed law.
A spokesman for the Attorney General says the postponement is based on an upcoming review of his subversion case by the Supreme Court.
In 1978 the Sukoharjo district court in Central Java jailed Ba'asyir for nine years for subversion, but another court halved the sentence and he served four years in prison before moving to Malaysia.
However, the Supreme Court overturned the lower court's ruling and re-imposed the original nine-year sentence.
Singapore accuses Ba'asyir of being a leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah extremist group, the regional allies of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network.
