Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party approves reforms
Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party has approved reforms that will allow President Chen Shui-bian to further consolidate power ahead of the next presidential elections in 2004.
Delegates to a party convention voted 245-9 to endorse revisions to the charter to allow a DPP president to automatically serve also as as party chairman.
The DPP will hold elections for party chairmanship when it is in the opposition.
The move will further strengthen Mr Chen's position as he tries to rescue the island from its worst ever economic slump and thaw frosty ties with China.
Beijing has threatened to attack the democratic island of 23 million if it declares independence.
