Russia hopes to clinch a contract to modernise India's fleet
Russia hopes to clinch a contract to modernise India's fleet of 2,000 T-72 Soviet-made tanks, of which only a third are in use.
The director of the Ural Transport Engineering Design Bureau, Vladimir Domnin, said India is expected to invite bids for the modernisation of its T-72 tanks in mid-2002.
Mr Domnin said he believed that Russia had the best chance of winning the bid. India in February last year signed a billion-dollar deal for the purchase from Russia and licensed manufacture of the T-90 tank, rated as one of the most efficient tanks in the world.
In all, Russia will ship 150 of the T-90 tanks while with another 160 will be assembled under contract in India.
More than 70 percent of India's defense hardware is of Soviet or Russian origin.
