Indonesia's president urged to shun East Timor's celebrations

The head of Indonesia's highest legislative body has implored President Megawati Sukarnoputri to shun East Timor independence celebrations next month.

Amien Rais, who chairs the 700-seat People's Consultative Assembly said it would be better if Mrs Megawati did not attend. This would preserve Indonesia's dignity, self-esteem, and place in Southeast Asia.

His latest call for the president to snub the formal handover of sovereignty to the territory, of which Indonesia lost control 31 months ago, adds to a chorus of opposition from other legislators.

The house leader on trial for corruption, Akbar Tanjung, and Indonesia's foreign affairs commission, have repeatedly urged persident Megawati to stay away from the May 20 celebrations in East Timor's capital, Dili.
