Indonesia congratulates Gusmao on presidential victory
Indonesia has congratulated East Timor's president-elect, Xanana Gusmao.
Mr Gusmao led the guerrilla war against Indonesian forces in East Timor and spent almost seven years in an Indonesian prison.
The A-F-P newsagency says however, it was Mr Gusmao who telephoned Indonesia's Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda, several hours after the 83-percent victory was declared.
Mr Wirayuda congratulated Mr Gusmao and the East Timorese in general for the peaceful and democratic manner in which the election was held.
He described the election as being a major step on the path towards East Timor's independence.
In reply, Mr Gusmao expressed his determination to enhance close relations with Indonesia and asked Mr Wirayuda to convey his respects to President Megawati Sukarnoputri.
